This cowl is my go-to winter accessory. When I was still riding, it was the only one that was warm enough to withstand the cold and tall enough to keep my ears warm bringing in or taking out the horse. And bonus, it’s easy and fast to make!

Gathering Materials

Terms

  • Chain - ch

  • Stitch - st

  • Slip Stitch - sl

  • Single Crochet - sc

  • Double Crochet - dc

Pattern

Main Body

With the “Oatmeal” color, ch 15.

Row 1 - In second ch from hook, sc in each st.

Row 2 - Ch 1. Turn. Sc in each st.

Repeat row 2 until you reach row 60. Do not fasten off! It’s time to switch colors.

Boarder

To switch colors for the border, create a loop of color “Hudson Bay”, and pull it through the last ch of “Oatmeal”. Pull the tail of “Oatmeal” until the ch of “Oatmeal” closes completely around “Hudson Bay”. You should have a nice loop from “Hudson Bay” that looks like a continuation of the stitches.

Sc around the edge. When you reach the corner, sc, dc, sc in the same stitch to create a sharper corner. Sl st to join the beginning st to the end.

Ch 2. Dc in each st. Sl st to join the beginning st to the end. Fasten off and hide the ends.

Assembling

You should now have a long rectangle. It will need to be folded to create the “cowl-look”. Lay it right side down and label each side as “A”, “B”, “C”, and “D” (see picture).

Take the top corner of “A” and fold it so that the corner is in the middle of the rectangle (see picture).

Next, take the top corner of “D” and fold it so the top corner of “D” aligns with the bottom corner of “A” (see picture).

Take your three buttons and place them alongside “A” where you think is best! I like to place mine where the color change happens about 3 inches apart from one another.

You may be asking, “why didn’t we make buttonholes?” The 1 inch buttons are just the right size to pop in between each of the dc sts so there is no need to make a true buttonhole. If you were to use larger buttons, you may need to adjust the pattern to make buttonholes along the right side of edge “B”.

Once your buttons are sewn in place, you can begin wearing your cowl!
