Thick Cardigan

Need a warm cardigan this fall and winter? You may want to try this pattern out. With a half double crochet stitch it's just a little thicker.

This pattern is worked into 5 parts, back panel, front panels, the sleeves, and finally the border.

Pattern is shown as, small (medium, large, x large, xx large).

I am 5’ 8” and crocheted a large for me. I could have probably done a medium and been fine, but I like my cardigans on the larger side.

Front Left Panel

Hold the Back panel with the right side facing you, starting at the front right panel, count & skip 6 ( 8, 8, 8, 9) sts. The final st is where you’ll begin row 1.

Row 1 - Ch 2, hdc into next 35 (36, 39, 41, 43) sts

Sleeves (make 2)

The sleeves are worked separate from the main body of the cardigan. They are crocheted flat and then sewn into a tube.

Ch 55 (60, 65, 70, 75)

Row 1 - Sl into the first 10 sts, hdc into remaining sts

Row 2 - Ch 2, turn, hdc into 45 (50, 55, 60, 65) sts, sl in blo of the remaining 10 sts

Row 3 - Ch 1, turn, sl into blo of next 10 sts, hdc into remaining sts.

Repeat rows 2 & 3 until 34 (34, 36, 38, 38). Fasten off.

Sewing Sleeves

To sew the sleeves together, fold them right side together (so it’ll be inside… don’t worry, you’ll turn it right-side back out when you’re done sewing!).

Match the cuffs together and the shoulder together, and sl in blo beginning at the shoulder and ending at the cuff. Fasten off.

Assembling

You’ll be working with the main body of the cardigan inside out.

Turn the main body with the right sides facing each other and line up the bottom of the front panels with the back panel.

Next, place the sleeves (seems down) next to the cardigan. With your stitch marker, mark where the armpit of the sleeve is on both sides. HINT: I put the stitch marker so it pinches the back and front together so it keeps the cardigan together while I move it around.

From here you’ll be working on one side at a time.

On the side of your choice, sl starting from the bottom of the cardigan moving towards the armpit. Once you reach the stitch marker, place the seam of the sleeve on the stitch marker and begin to sl the sleeve to the cardigan. You should start at the armpit, travel up towards the shoulder and back down to the armpit. Fasten off and hide the ends.

Repeat on the other side.

Border

Congratulations! You’re almost complete with your cardigan. Realistically, if you want to stop here, you can, but to give it a finished look, add the border.

Start at the bottom of the cardigan between the right front panel and back panel with the right side facing you.

Row 1 - Ch 1, sc in each st around the cardigan. Sl in the beginning ch

Row 2 - Ch 2, dc in each st. Sl to join.

Row 3 - Ch 2, alternate between dcfp and dcbp around the cardigan. Sl to join.

Repeat Row 3 (making sure the dcfp and dcbp match with the previous row) until Row 5. Fasten off and weave in all ends of the cardigan.
